Program overview

The Far South Coast Surfing Academy Program is offered in partnership with Surfing NSW and Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS).

In supporting the development of Far South Coast Surfing NSW coaches, a scholarship is offered to aspiring coaches to assist with their development within the high-performance coaching arena.

The scholarship provides financial support to accredit and upskill coaching qualifications as well as mentoring support to help coaches gain valuable elite level experience whilst augmenting their knowledge and skills through hands-on coaching and education opportunities.

Coach benefits

Scholarship coaches will be provided with:

  • Subsidised Level 1 or Level 2 accreditation
  • Individual and squad coaching opportunities
  • Coach Education & Personal Development opportunities
  • A Surfing NSW Mentor Coach

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Far South Coast Surfing Coaches Scholarship, coaches must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Reside within the Kiama, Shoalhaven or South East Region of NSW*
  2. Be a keen learner who collaborate to achieve maximum performance gains
  3. Be willing to obtain or already have a level 1 coach accreditation. If you have a level 1 accreditation you are able to progress to level 2
  4. Demonstrate an ability to work with potential Australian Winning Edge category athletes
  5. Coaches must have / obtain Working With Children Check

Selection criteria

To gain selection into the SESA Surfing Coach development Program athletes must satisfy the eligibility criteria and then the following will be taken into consideration:

Coaching Scholarships - Level 1 Surf Coach

  • Already coaching but unaccredited
  • Coaching record – including demonstrated success in developing athletes
  • Personal coaching goals
  • Commitment to learn and develop
  • Willingness to share and exchange information
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Well connected with the local surf industry 

Coaching Scholarships - Level 2 Surf Coach

  • Already a Level 1 accredited Surfing Australia Coach or eligible to apply for RPL
  • Coaching record – including demonstrated success in developing athletes
  • Personal coaching goals
  • Commitment to learn and develop
  • Willingness to share and exchange information
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Well connected with the local surf industry 

Conditions of scholarship

Before being accepted into the scholarship program the coach must satisfy and agree to the following requirements of the program:

  • Coaches must agree to operate under the Surfing NSW Coaches Code of Conduct
  • Coaches hold a current coaching accreditation through Surfing Australia or demonstrate that they are working towards this (for all existing Level 1 Coaches upskilling to a Level 2 coach)
  • Coaches must identify themselves residing or working on the South Coast and demonstrate a willingness to develop South Coast athletes
  • Coaches must be able to demonstrate that they can share information gathered with other coaches
  • Applicants must hold or be willing to obtain an appropriate NSW Working with Children (WWC) Check if they are working with minors.
  • Be committed to a holistic approach to athlete development and willing to participate in "myAISbasecamp"

Additionally, the successful coaches will be expected to undertake the following online education modules if they have not previously done so.

  • Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority Level One Module
  • Keep Sport Honest Module 1

The Surfing NSW Far South Coast Regional Academy Program will involve weekend work, training camp attendance, competitions, professional development, and observation of coaching.

Selection process

Coaches are required to complete the Online Application Form for initial assessment

After an initial assessment of the applications, shortlisted coaches will be interviewed by Surfing NSW personnel with a final recommendation made to the Office of Sport for endorsement. Applicants will be notified of the result of their application by 25 August 2017.
